On 28th June our students of class X visited Navjivan school in a slum area near Majhiwada, Thane. The school has students studying from Pre-Primary to grade 7th in a ground plus one facility.
It was a rainy day and 32 students along with me, their Class teacher. It was a part of our Socially Useful project work. We didn’t expect to hear and see what we witnessed.
We met Mr.Jitendra Bajaj who is the person running this NGO which has 5 branches in slums of Thane. It runs purely on funds given by good Samaritans. It was a mixed feeling while we were there. While it was heartbreaking to hear Mr.Bajaj tell us horrors of the children who come to their school for education. It was lovely to see brilliant kids with a zest for life and with ambitions and funny when suddenly we heard a bark only to realize we had a dog also present in the hall area.
When our Principal Ma’am met the kids a day later to ask their experience interacting with the kids we could feel that the visit made a difference to them. They said they valued the meals they got at home and I also said that the money I spend on 1 t-shirt can buy a child’s education for an entire year.
We have planned to donate our old clothes, books, and toys to these kids. If anyone has these things please send it along with the kids to school once we start collecting it.
